Saba Run Cycle by Tazihound Saba Run Cycle by Tazihound
-Edited-
Thank you all for the help!

This is the first 4 legged run cycle I've attempted, and although there are errors (tracking on markings and chest are off, stiff body, eye trace, and weird things going on with dragging elements) I am happy with it. I decided to animated on 1s (15 frames) but I think I'd try 8 frames on 2s next time to avoid jittering. I chose Saba because I think she'd have pretty generic run cycle and I wanted to start somewhere basic. Any constructive critiques are appreciated!

Hi guys, I need help with exporting gifs correctly from photoshop. I can't get the gif to run at the right frame rate-it's always too slow.  It seems to export fine from flash but the quality is horrid. Does anyone know how to fix this or has a better way to save gifs?

Thank you!

How do you make a run cycle?

well the first step is to find good reference, usually I'll look at youtube for that, then I download the file and look at each individual pose. From there I look at three things: the major positions of the chest, legs, and dragging elements (such as tail, head, jaw, ect.) I mark the 'up' positions and the 'down' positions, then sketch those in PS. These are the major position that the character takes. The rest is inbetweening those poses. I hope this makes sense xP I would recommend Richard Willaim's Animator Survival Kit if you'd like to learn more, because I'm no expert xD

What program did you use for this?

I use a combination of photoshop and flash. I key out everything in photoshop and test the timing in flash before inbetweening, bust essentially everything is done in PS :) also if you have QuickTime Pro you can use that instead of flash to test the timing. Let me know if you ever need animation help and I'll try my best to explain

If you're using Flash:

I've had some luck with publishing from Flash instead of exporting (File->publish settings then make it look roughly like this bit.ly/VTqc1P).  Click "publish" at the end and it should make a gif version in whatever folder the original file is.

Gorgeous by the way!  I especially love how the ears are moving! They have a very nice weight to them.

Tracking markings is the worst xD I work on some stuff for wolfmovie.com and that is the part that can take the longest for me hahaha. Danged complicated wolfs!

By the way, I saw your interview with WIA on my Facebook feed a while back and I wanted to say congratulations and you are a great inspiration for me =]

I envy your skills of clean-up! OMG  My clean-up lines are never nice and smooth but always just a mess... Disbelief Or maybe I'm just lacking the patience to draw them more clean.. :P

Great little piece of animation! :)

Yes I did actually, although was 3D animation school. x3
2D animation I learnt at work where I was lucky to get a chance to do it. :)
Oh yeah, for me the rough animation part is fast and easy, but when it comes to clean-up it's too slow and and I'm just dying with it, I really suck at drawing clean lines.. x__X

Indeed I am! :) I work at Rovio Animation studio, so mainly I animate Angry Birds and those green piggies, and lots of other things too. I get to do 2D and 3D animation and all sorts between.. x3 I really like my job and I love my work place as the team is really fun and full of nice and talented people. I even get to work with some former Disney artists, which is pretty cool. :D

In case you're interested what we've been doing, here's a place to watch: www.toons.tv/
The site is full of stuff by other studios as well, but my work can be seen in those "Piggy tales", some of the "Angry Birds Toons" episodes and some of the "Cinematic specials". Oh yeah, and a little highlight for a Lion King fan like me, was to do some clean-up for a short ("Ode to snow") with a song sang by no other than Ernie Sabella himself! (Voice of Pumbaa) :giggle:

Ps. If you're interested finding a place of internship or something, I can speak some nice words for you, if a little adventure in Finland sounds like fun to you! ;)

Oh wow I checked out the website and some of the animations and it looks like a great company. I would actually love to travel to Finland for a few months, interning abroad is something I have seriously been considering lately. I'm going to speak with my professors and maybe I can apply for an internship this fall or spring, and if not definitely next summer =] I feel so fortunate to have met you through here and will certainly be in touch!

My enter hitting fingers were too fast... What I was also about to say here, is what I recommend you to do before applying or anything, is to put up a very strong demo reel/show reel, to show your best animations. Also you can send me your real name (by note if you prefer other people not to see it) so I can write a recommendations for you in our internal system at work. So the HR people can spot you more easily when they're going through the applicants. ;) Also I can give you my supervisor's email address so you can send email (and your demo reel) directly to him and ask for a internship position.

But as I said in the earlier message my supervisor is on holiday for the next few weeks so no hurry with this thing. x3

Wow fantastic thank you so much for all of your help. I will definitely apply. I'm going to update my demo reel and resume, would it be possible to get some feedback from you if you have the time? Thank you again for your assistance and for introducing me to the company!

hey i think i can try and help you with your gif problem? Have you tried saving it for web, its under save as or somewhere near there, a attachment should come up, click the little button that says animate, and look down to the corner for the small thing that looks like 0:05 and so on, thats how fast the frames delay. and then preview it on a browser by clicking the small preview button at the bottom.
there should certainly be some helpful tutorials on youtube but this is how i edit gifs for tumblr and such.

If it doesnt work, sorry i couldnt help. It looks amazing though! <3
